The 12th Annual Night of Hope Auction was a wonderful success! We raised more than our goal and will share that number when it is official. We know we set a new record! And thank you to all those who attended and bid on items. We truly appreciate and need your support! The Miracle A miracle occurred at the auction on May 16th. Part way into the live auction, we shared a patient story with the audience. We told them we needed their help now more than ever. Wings of Hope Hospice takes anyone who qualifies for hospice care, whether or not they have insurance. There are no out of pocket expenses to the patient. We don't ever want money to be a barrier to care at the end of life. If, however, someone comes to us without insurance, Wings of Hope must pick up the entire $152 cost per day of providing the patients' medications, medical supplies, equipment, and oxygen. We then explained to the audience that we estimate Wings will have 103 days of uninsured patient care for the last 7 months of 2009. Jeff Gouker, the auctioneer, asked how many people would buy 10 patient days at $152 per day? We thought we'd start at 10 days but that no one would go that high. Two people raised their bidder numbers. Then he went down to 8 days. Many people raised their numbers. Then 5, then 3….hand after hand went up. We raced past the 103 day mark and auction goers kept committing to pay for patient days. We got down to 2 days and someone said they wanted to bid 10 days! Then another person added 8 days to the 2 he'd already bought! By the time we were done, we had raised money for 242 patient days….nearly $36,000. It was phenomenal.
