Hospice is specialized healthcare for adults nearing the end
of their lives. The focus of care is on comfort rather than
cure. All needs of the patients are addressed, beginning with
physical comfort, freedom from pain and other symptoms. The
emotional and spiritual well-being of the patient are also primary
concerns.
Hospice recognizes that a serious illness affects all those
who love the patient, so we involve the entire family, offering
services of support and education. Hospice is a unique type
of healthcare in these ways:
The word "Hospice" has its roots in old French and Latin and
means "a shelter or lodging for weary travelers," a fitting
description for those on their final journey of life. The modern
concept of hospice came to us from England. Hospice in the United
States began in the early 70's in Connecticut.
Hospice in Nursing Homes and Hospitals
Wings of Hope Hospice provides care wherever the patient lives.
Although patients are mostly receiving hospice in their homes,
care is also delivered in the hospital, nursing home, assisted
living facility, adult foster care facility, foster home, or
home for the aged. We provide care through written agreements
in all hospitals and nursing homes located in Allegan County
and many in surrounding communities.
Hospice can work with facilities outside of the county if that
is where the patient and family prefer care. We are committed
to provide care wherever it is needed and to work collaboratively
with facility staff and provide training on end of life care.
