For specialized health care for adults nearing the end of their lives, many Southwest Michigan residents turn to Wings of Hope Hospice. Allegan County residents and residents in surrounding communities can take comfort in knowing that we are here to care for their loved ones in this time of need. Our circle of care extends throughout Allegan County and into parts of Holland and Kalamazoo, as well as some communities south of Grand Rapids.
The focus of hospice care is on comfort rather than cure. All needs of the patients are addressed, beginning with physical comfort, freedom from pain and other symptoms. The emotional and spiritual well-being of the patient are also primary concerns.
Hospice recognizes that a serious illness affects all those who love the patient, so we involve the entire family, offering services of support and education. Hospice is a unique type of healthcare in these ways:
The word "Hospice" has its roots in old French and Latin and means "a shelter or lodging for weary travelers," a fitting description for those on their final journey of life. The modern concept of hospice came to us from England. Hospice in the United States began in Connecticut in 1973.
Hospice in Nursing Homes and Hospitals
Wings of Hope Hospice provides care wherever the patient lives. Although patients are mostly receiving hospice in their homes, care is also delivered in the hospital, nursing home, assisted living facility, adult foster care facility, foster home, or home for the aged. We provide care through written agreements in all hospitals and nursing homes located in Allegan County and many in surrounding communities.
Hospice can work with facilities outside of the county if that is where the patient and family prefer care. We are committed to provide care wherever it is needed and to work collaboratively with facility staff and provide training on end of life care.
